Aircraft noise remains a major inhibitor of the growth of commercial air transportation due to its impact on local communities surrounding airports. To address this issue, regulators place strict restrictions on aircraft noise pollution, making engine acoustics a primary area of interest for airlines and manufacturers.

Clean-Sheet Supersonic Engine Design and Performance

Currently, the design philosophy for the propulsion systems of supersonic transport aircraft is to design them around existing engines and/or cores (i.e. derivative engines), but no clean-sheet engine development programs have been pursued. This project aims to evaluate the design space of clean-sheet engines designed specifically for use on civil supersonic aircraft, and to determine the resulting noise and environmental footprint of such engines. This project is part of the ASCENT (Aviation Sustainability Center) (https://ascent.aero).
